PAN Aadhaar Linking Process
Legislation for every individual of the country was brought in by the ministry in the budget 2017 to link PAN with the Aadhaar card. The Central Board of Direct taxes has subsequently extended the date of Linking rule from 31st December 2019 to 31st March 2020.
As per the Income Tax department proclamation, it is obligatory to link your PAN with Aadhaar without which if not done in the prescribed period, you will not be able to file the income tax return or your PAN might become ‘inoperative’. Although the Central Board of Direct Taxes had extended the date for linking the two documents the seventh time, the department has chosen to provide another chance to the public till 31st March 2020. It has promulgated warning taxpayers on a social media platform that missing the deadline again will not allow non-linked PAN cards to be accepted anymore by the income-tax departments from April 1st, 2020.
The government has provided various understandable modes for linking PAN card with Aadhaar card. If your Aadhaar is not linked with PAN card, you will not be able to file the income tax return, you will not be eligible for carrying out the banking transactions of above Rs.50,000.
There are two possible ways of linking your PAN with Aadhaar card:
Through the Income-tax e-filing website
There are two ways of online linking of both the documents on income-tax e-filing portal:
1. Without logging in to your account
Visit www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and click on the left pane – Link Aadhaar.
Fill in the details:
- Aadhaar Number
- Enter the name as mentioned on the Aadhaar Card (avoiding spelling errors)
Click on ‘Submit’ after filling in all the required fields. The linking will be accepted after the post verification from UIDAI.
Please ensure that the name, date of birth and gender are same in both the documents or else in case of Aadhaar name mismatch, Aadhaar OTP will be required. If Aadhaar name is completely different from the name mentioned in the PAN card, then the user will be prompted to change the name either in Aadhaar card or PAN card.
2. Logging in to your account
Register yourself at the income tax e-filing portal, if you are not registered.
Login to the e-filing portal of the income tax department and enter the login ID, password and date of birth.
A pop-up window will appear on your screen after logging in to the website which will prompt you to link your PAN with Aadhaar card. If there is no pop-up window on your screen then go to the blue tab on the top bar named ‘Profile Settings’ and click on ‘Link 1Aadhaar’.
Cross-check your details on the screen with the ones mentioned on your Aadhaar card.
Enter your Aadhaar number and captcha code if the details match and click on the ‘Link now’ button.
A pop-up message will let you know that your Aadhaar number has been successfully linked to your PAN card.
Sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161
The income tax department has aided the taxpayers by providing them with a facility of linking their PAN card with the Aadhaar card by sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161 from the registered mobile number. You are supposed to type UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN> and send it to the prescribed number for linking both the documents.
Why is PAN Aadhaar Linking Mandatory?
Linking PAN-Aadhaar has become mandatory for the Indian expats till 31st March 2020 if they are holding any one of them either PAN or Aadhaar card. If an NRI wishes to do financial transactions back home, it would be a fruitful advice for him to have both a PAN card and Aadhaar card in his name. This linkage is supposed to be done by 31st March 2020.
If NRIs choose to make investments in the country or have a taxable income in India, the Indian Government has made it binding for them to hold PAN card in this case.
Advantages of linking PAN and Aadhaar card
Inhibiting Black Wealth Revolution
Linking an Aadhaar card with PAN card will restrict the possibilities of financing illegal activities like drug trafficking. As of now, it is easier to get into such activities by fake identities.
Easier for filing returns by Taxpayers
While filing Income Tax returns, the government has made it essential for the taxpayers to provide both PAN and Aadhaar card details as linking both the documents will authorize an individual for hassle-free online return filing.
Identifying tax escapist
Linking the PAN and Aadhaar will let the Income Tax department footmark every individual’s financial transactions and the tax they should pay. PAN Card is an essential KYC requirement for bank accounts and linking it with Aadhaar will automatically link an individual’s Aadhaar with his/her bank accounts. Presently, it is an important tool for paying taxes.
Elimination of fabricated PAN cards
The individuals who use fabricated PAN cards for not paying taxes or pay fewer taxes or obscure their taxable income will be stamped out by the government by enforcing this linking rule in the system.
