American internet and aerospace entrepreneur, Jeff Bezos (Jeffery Preston Bezos) was born on January 12, 1964, at Albuquerque in New Mexico, the U.S. Also, a media proprietor and investor, Bezos played a significant role in the growth of e-commerce American as the founder and chief executive officer of Amazon.com, Inc., an online merchant of books and later of a wide range of products. Under his guidance, Amazon became the largest retailer on the Internet and the model for Internet sales.
Bezos started the Dream Institute while he was still in high school. It was a centre to promote creative thinking among young students. After graduating in 1986 from Princeton University in electrical engineering and computer science, he undertook a series of jobs before joining the New York investment bank D.E. Shaw & Co. in 1990. Soon he was in charge of examining the investment possibilities of the Internet. In 1994 Bezos quit D.E. Shaw and moved to Seattle, Washington, to open a virtual bookstore. Working out of his garage with a handful of employees, Bezos started developing the software for the site. Named after the South American river, Amazon sold its first book in July 1995.
In no time Amazon became the leader in e-commerce. It was a site which was open 24 hours a day and was user-friendly. It encouraged browsers to post their reviews of books and offer discounts, personalised recommendations, and searches for out-of-print books.
In June 1998 Amazon started to sell CDs and videos. In 1999 Bezos added auctions to the site and invested in other virtual stores. Amazon’s success encouraged other retailers, including major book chains, to establish online stores. By 2005 Amazon offered a vast range of products, including consumer electronics, apparel, and hardware. The site diversified even further in 2006 by introducing Amazon Web Services, a cloud computing service that soon became the largest such service in the world.
In 2007 Amazon released a new handheld reading device called the Kindle, which is a digital book reader with wireless Internet connectivity, enabling customers to buy, download, read, and store a vast collection of books on demand.
In 2010 Amazon announced that sales of Kindle books had exceeded those of hardcover books. That same year Amazon also started making its television series and movies with its Amazon Studios division. Amazon’s yearly net sales increased from $510,000 in 1995 to some $600 million in 1998 and from more than $19.1 billion in 2008 to almost $233 billion in 2018.
Jeff Bezos Controversy over Hacked Phone
According to the allegations, Amazon founder Bezos’ phone was hacked using malicious software delivered in a WhatsApp message that came directly from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed’s phone number in November 2018 when the two met over dinner and exchanged phone numbers.
According to reports, Bezos allegedly received a text from Crown Prince Mohammed’s WhatsApp number again with a woman’s photo who resembled Sanchez months before the Bezos affair was known publicly. Bezos would later forestall a National Enquirer story on the affair in a post on Medium, which also was the first time he mentioned a possible connection between Saudi Arabia and the hack.
According to the CIA, the Saudis targeted Bezos because he owns TheWashington Post, which published work from Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi dissenter. Saudi agents murdered Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018 at the direction of the crown prince. After initial denials, the Saudis acknowledged the murder and sentenced several people to death for it, but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed knew about it.
The report also said that the hack used the software of an Israeli company called NSO Group, which sells a software platform called ‘Pegasus’. This platform allows governments to access internet-connected devices.
According to the company, it only sells its products to government agencies pursuing information from the devices of criminals and terrorists. Human rights activists, however, have said the software is used much more widely and to target attorneys, journalists and dissenters who are against various governments that have contracted with NSO Group. However, NSO Group denied the involvement of its software.
Regarding this, the Saudi Embassy tweeted, “Recent media reports that suggest the Kingdom is behind the hacking of Mr Jeff Bezos’ phone are absurd. We call for an investigation on these claims so that we can have all the facts out.”
