The soft inauguration of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Bathinda took place on December 23rd 2019 by Union Health Minister for Family and Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan in the esteemed presence of Union Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal. Nearly 102 patients availed the OPD (Outpatient Department) services at the institute which were made functional on the same day for public. The departments like Orthopaedics with 19 patients and General Medicines with 32 patients observed the maximum number of patients on Tuesday. Bathinda MP and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal were delighted and satisfied with the world-class healthcare facility in the Punjab state of India.

The approval of AIIMS Bathinda, Punjab was granted by the Cabinet in July 2016 under Phase V of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The foundation stone for AIIMS was laid in November 2016. This project costing Rs 925 crore was anticipated to conclude by June 2020.

Dr Harsh Vardhan said that the neighbouring states would also be able to reap the benefits of this premier medical institute along with the Punjab state. Enrolment of Specialist doctors for 9 out of 12 departments was concluded in time and therefore, the departments are in the running stage in the institute from December 23rd. Due to the high-quality and affordable medical and health services, people belonging to each category will be able to access the services at AIIMS hospital, Bhatinda, Punjab.

Health has been put in the array of top priorities of the government under the leadership of the Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modiji. It is evident from the rise in the statistics of AIIMS to 21 that the government is committed towards the health services of the nation. The government has been putting in its continuous efforts for setting up 157 Medical colleges in the aspirational districts of the country to ensure that the people are being provided with superior health services. A lot of developments and tenacity can be seen in the health sector all over the country.

This institute is a 750-bed premier medical institute established on 177-acre land incorporating 10 speciality and 11 super speciality departments. The institute will also have 16-ultra modern operation theatres.

The AIIMS Bhatinda has 100 seats in medical college and 60 seats in nursing college. 

PGIMER Chandigarh has been authorised with the obligation of mentoring AIIMS as the institute is under development right now.

AIIMS, Bhatinda will be fully operational by June 2020. The first batch of 50 MBBS students of AIIMS Bhatinda has begun their academic year 2019-20 on Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot campus temporarily.

The timings for OPD services are slated from 9 am and the registration process will take place from 8 am to 11 am. Emergency services and indoor facilities will be commenced in November 2020.

A groundwork for providing medicines on discounted rates through AMRIT pharmacy, a government of India initiative, has also been introduced.

Currently, the institute does not provide the facility of microbiology, pathology and chemotherapy but will add these very soon.

Under Ayushman Bharat, nearly 1.5 lakh Health & Wellness Centres have been provided comprehensive primary healthcare, 70 lakh needy and defenceless people have reaped the benefits under PMJAY scheme and ecards have been granted to 11.66 cr beneficiaries, according to Dr Harsh Vardhan.

Posterior to the commencement of indoor services in the hospital in November, the Ayushman Bharat scheme will also be implemented. Government has also made several endeavours through Fit India Movement and Eat Right India Campaign to achieve objectives of universal health coverage.

Dr Harsh Vardhan also made a declaration that the satellite centre for PGI Chandigarh coming up in Firozpur will be functional by 2022. The costing for the same is projected at Rs. 450 crore.
