Saurabh Shukla Biography

A well-known Indian actor, director and screenwriter, Saurabh Shukla celebrated his 57th birthday on March 5 this year. He is an eminent personality in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada cinema in addition to Bollywood. He is an Indian Film Actor, Theatre Actor, Television Actor and Comedian. 

In 1986, Saurabh made his appearance in some prominent plays like A View From The Bridge by Arthur Miller, Look Back In Anger by John Osborne, Ghashiram Kotwal by Vijay Tendulkar and Hayvadan. He pursued his theatres in Delhi from 1984 to 1993 and never thought of instigating his career in Hindi cinema. In 1991, he joined the NSD Repertoire Company, the professional wing of the National School of Drama as an actor. He fascinated the famous filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor with his work and made his first on-screen appearance as Kailash in Shekhar Kapoor directorial ‘Bandit Queen’ in 1994. Before this movie, Saurabh was working in the 1994 Doordarshan crime drama ‘Tehkikaat’ as Vijay Anand’s sidekick Gopi’s role. He composed and enacted in Zee TV’s 9 Malabar Hill. 

In 1998, his first Bollywood movie as a screenwriter was ‘Satya’ which was the turning point of his life. He appeared as a gangster Kallu Mama in Ram Gopal Verma’s cult classic movie post which he got huge recognition.

He gave his first debut directorial film ‘Mudda – The Issue’ in 2003. In the same year, he composed the screenplay for Calcutta Mail. In 2008, he portrayed the character of Constable Srinivas in his international debut movie, the Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning Slumdog Millionaire. 

Shukla loves to make realistic movies like Satya and promotes plausibility in his scripts. He always puts some comic element in his work. 

In 2013, he was featured in the Anurag Basu directorial Barfi as a policeman Sudhanshu Datta.  

Shukla garnered the Star Screen Award for Best Screenplay alongside Anurag Kashyap. He bagged the Zee Cine Award for Best Screenplay for the movie ‘Calcutta Mail’. He also earned the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Jolly LLB. He has received seven nominations throughout his acting career – for Jolly LLB in 2014 for Apsara Award by Apsara Film Producers Guild Awards and Popular Award by International Indian Film Academy, for Barfi in 2013 for Popular Award by IIFA, for Raid in 2019 for Screen Award by Screen Awards IN, for Raid in 2019 for Jury’s Choice Award by Zee Cine Awards, for Jolly LLB2 in 2018 for Jury’s Choice Award by Zee Cine Awards and Calcutta Mail in 2004 for Technical Award by Zee Cine Awards.

Subhash Kapoor directorial Madam Chief Minister is slated to release worldwide on 17th July 2020 whereas Hansal Mehta directorial Chhalang will be showcased on Silver Screens one month before Madam Chief Minister on 12th June 2020. 

Mohabbatein in 2000, Lage Raho Munnabhai in 2006, Kick and PK in 2014 are some of the blockbuster movies of his career. Shivaay, Yeh Saali Zindagi, Mithya, Satya, Bandit Queen, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai also gave good returns and are among his hit films.  

Saurabh Shukla Personal Life

Hailing from the family of musicians, Saurabh was born in the house of father Shatrughan Shukla who was a vocalist from Agra Gharana and mother Dr Jogmaya Shukla who was a first woman Tabla player of India in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh in India. He was born on 5th March 1963. He has one elder brother and both of them used to watch four movies in a week during their childhood. He loves reading, writing and watching movies in his leisure time. His family moved to Delhi from Gorakhpur when he was just two-year-old. He finished his education from Khalsa College, Delhi and began his professional career in acting in 1984. He was determined to be a film-maker when he was in grade 6. His favourite film-maker is Shekhar Kapoor. 

Shukla tied the knot with Shukla Barnali Ray.
