An Indian politician and the present Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan celebrated his 76th birthday this year.

Pinarayi Vijayan Biography

Hailing from an impoverished family, Pinarayi Vijayan was born to Mundayil Koran (father) and Kalyani (mother) in Pinarayi village in Kannur district, Madras Presidency, British India on 21st March 1944. Because of the negligible healthcare facilities, poor accessibility to hospitals or clinics and high mortality rate in Kerala in that era, only 3 children (including him) of his parents could outlived. They eked out their living by tapping toddy from coconut trees. 

As Modi comes from an OBC community, Vijayan also belongs to underprivileged Thiyya caste which is the lower social hierarchy. He finished his primary education from Peralassery High School. He did a pre-university course and Bachelors in Economics from Government Brennen College, Thalassery. Post schooling, he worked as a handloom weaver and supported his family for about a year.   

Pinarayi Vijayan Political Career

In 1964, Pinarayi entered politics by uniting with Communist Party of India (Marxist). Before joining hands with CPI, he actively participated in student union activities at Government Brennen College, Thalassery. Later, he emerged as a Kannur district secretary of the KSF (Kerala Students Federation) which eventually transformed into Students Federation of India. He held the position of state secretary and president of KSF. He was also elected as the president of Kerala State Youth Federation. 

Pinarayi served as the president of the Kerala State Co-operative Bank. According to the reports, he was also confined by the police during National Emergency in 1975 and was tormented in the prison. Due to the governance of political movements by the pinkos in Kerala, he was seized.

He was chosen to Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1970, 1977 and 1991 from Kuthuparamba, in 1996 from Payyanur and in 2016 from Dharmadom. 

From 1996 to 1998, he acted as the Minister for Electric Power and Co-operatives under the E.K. Nayanar Ministry. During his term, he reinforced the new projects and executed them timely because of which the state accomplished a momentous development and advancement in the power generation capacity. 

Due to the demise of the obligatory Chadayan Govindan, he was designated as the state secretary of the CPI (M) in 1998. In 2002, he was chosen as a member of the Politburo of the CPI (M).

On 26th May 2007, he along with his rival V.S. Achuthanandan was laid off by the CPI (M) for making public statements in media for each other. But Vijayan was rehired at the party afterwards.

In 2016, he emerged as the head of Left Democratic Front which is an amalgamation of Kerala’s two major political parties including Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India. On May 25, 2016, he took oath along with his 19-member cabinet as the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala. Under his dynasty as a CM, various programs were launched which encompass Ardram Mission, Haritha Keralam Mission, Project LIFE and Comprehensive Education Reforms. He also brought-in India’s first-ever, an all-woman police troop known as Pink Patrol in Kerala to get the hang of the security of women and children in public places. Besides, he also took charge of Home Affairs and Vigilance Departments. 

Pinarayi Vijayan Achievements

Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore has garnered Pinarayi Vijayan and Health Minister K.K. Shailaja for the Kerala government’s efforts in suppressing the Nipah virus outbreak. 

In 2017, Kerala triumphed India Today’s Best Big State Award in governance category under the Chief Ministership of Pinarayi Vijayan.

Pinarayi Vijayan Personal Life

Pinarayi enjoys eating Fish Curry with Rice. His all-time favourite thespians are Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan and Sridevi. His leisure interests include reading and watching movies. His most cherished dream holiday destination is Paris. He loves to do fishing in his free time. 

In 1978, Pinarayi exchanged conjugal vows with Kamala Vijayan, a government school teacher who is retired now. The couple is blessed with son named Vivek Kiran Vijayan and daughter named Veena Vijayan. His son is employed at HSBC bank, Abu Dhabi and his daughter is an entrepreneur who owns an IT company in Bangalore. Pinarayi stays along with his wife in the official residence of the Chief Minister at Trivandrum.
