The Indian film director and screenwriter, Bejoy Nambiar celebrated his 41st birthday this year on April 12. Bejoy is best known for films like Shaitan (2011), David (2013), Wazir (2016) and critically acclaimed short films, Rahu and Reflections, starring Mohanlal. His upcoming revenge drama film Taish starring Pulkit Samrat, Kriti Kharbanda, Jim Sarbh and Harshvardhan Rane is announced for theatrical release on January 15, 2021.

Bejoy Nambiar Biography

Bejoy Nambiar was born on April 12, 1979, in Kannur, Kerala. He attended Gokuldham High School in Goregaon East, Mumbai and later at PVG’s Vidya Bhawan High School in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. He graduated with an Engineering degree from Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was part of a theatre group called The Theatre Club of Bangalore.

Bejoy made his directorial debut in 2005 with short silent film Reflections written and produced by himself. The short film, starring Mohanlal, Juhi Babbar, and Vidula Bhave, was shot in three days with the post-production completed in eight months. He also directed a 40-minute film titled Rahu, starring Madhu, Tilakhan, Sandeep Kulkarni, Kamilini Mukherjee and Sheetal Menon. His debut feature film was the 2011 black comedy crime thriller, Shaitan starring Rajeev Khandelwal, Kalki Koechlin, Gulshan Devaiya, Shiv Pandit, Neil Bhoopalam, Kirti Kulhari, Rajit Kapoor, Pawan Malhotra and Rajkummar Rao. His next feature film was the bilingual crime drama film David in 2013 starring Vikram, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vinay Virmani in the title role, alongside Tabu, Monica Dogra, Lara Dutta and Isha Sharvani. An altered version of the film with the same title was made in Tamil in the same year featuring Vikram and Jiiva in the title roles, alongside Tabu, Lara Dutta, Isha Sharvani and Nassar.

In 2014, he produced two films, Aman Sachdeva’s romantic comedy-drama film Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi, starring Siddharth Gupta, in the titular role and debutant Akshay Akkineni’s horror film Pizza, starring Akshay Oberoi, Parvathy Omanakuttan and Dipannita Sharma in the lead roles, while Arunoday Singh, Rajesh Sharma, Omkar Das Manikpuri and Sonali Sachdev play supporting roles. In 2016, he directed the crime thriller film Wazir produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and featuring Farhan Akhtar and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles alongside Aditi Rao Hydari, Manav Kaul and Neil Nitin Mukesh in supporting roles and John Abraham in a special appearance.

His first film outside Bollywood was the 2017 anthology film Solo that was co-written, co-produced by himself. The film shot simultaneously in Malayalam and Tamil, featuring Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role is the story of four people, each revolving around the four elements: Earth, Fire, Wind and Water, each with the facets of Lord Shiva. He is the writer of 2018 road film Karwaan directed by debutant Akarsh Khurana. The film starring Irrfan Khan, Dulquer Salmaan, and Mithila Palkar also marked the Bollywood debut of Dulquer Salmaan. In 2019, Bejoy along with Aman Sachdeva created the Eros Now Original Series, Flip featuring Ranvir Shorey, Jim Sarbh, Shruti Marathe, Arjun Mathur, Shweta Basu Prasad, Shweta Gulati, Viraf Phiroz Patel, Sandeepa Dhar, Sheetal Menon and Naman Shaw. Bejoy became the winner of Sony PIX’s Gateway to Hollywood, as the best director in May 2008, with his well-executed and gripping drama. The competition was judged by Ashok Amritraj, Rajat Kapoor and Anurag Basu.

Bejoy won the Screen Award for Most Promising Debut Director at the 18th Annual Colors Screen Awards for the film Shaitan. He was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director in the 57th Idea Filmfare Awards in 2011 for the film Shaitan. He along with Megha Ramaswamy was nominated for Best Screenplay at Apsara Film Producers Guild Awards in 2012 for the film Shaitan (2011). Bejoy got married to Juhi Babbar on 27 June 2007 but they were separated in January 2009 after a two-year courtship. On December 27, 2015, he married his long-time girlfriend Sheetal Menon in a traditional Malayali wedding in Kerala.

Bejoy worked as a second unit assistant director in Mani Ratnam’s 2007 biographical drama film Guru. He was a line producer of Mani Ratnam’s 2010 epic action-adventure film Raavan and for its Tamil version Raavanan. He was the writer and executive producer of the 2012 TV series MTV Rush. He was one of the jury members of the India Film Projects in 2013. In 2018, he directed a short film Dobaara starring Manav Kaul and Parvathy Omanakuttan in lead roles.
