The two-day India Today Conclave 2019, hosted by Mumbai on September 20, brought together an inspirational array of cutting edge authors, entrepreneurs, artists, activists and some famous political leaders from across the world. The Conclave focused on the Indian economy, the situation in Kashmir and the world of showbiz.

The two-day Conclave of engaging conversations, heated debates, and inspirational keynotes, played host to an intelligence exchange that covered various topics. From the Indian economy and the situation in Kashmir to the politics of Maharashtra and the world of showbiz, the event had it all. And, a big announcement by the government on corporate tax cut made the session even more interesting.

Some of the interesting sessions were on topics like India’s water crisis, the $5 trillion goal for the Indian economy, the problems plaguing the MSMEs, the Modi-Shah gamble in Kashmir, the role of social media influencers in shaping the psyche of the Indian youth, how automation and artificial intelligence will affect the workforce, the way in which sex robots are impacting human sexuality, the latest discoveries about the human brain, first-person stories about teenage depression and more.

India Today Conclave 2019: Day 1

The Day 1 of the India Today Conclave 2019 witnessed interesting debates, engaging keynotes and informed panel discussions on a variety of subjects. It started with a welcome address by India Today Group Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie who spoke about India’s demographic dividend and the concerns being raised about the economy while emphasizing on the need for a ‘minimum government’. The Chairman’s address was followed by a keynote delivered by current RBI governor Shaktikanti Das who revealed that the central bank had sensed a slowdown in the economy in February this year and had started taking measures since then. Das also said that recent measures announced by the government would be good for the economy.

In addition, the experts on the economy— Roopa Purushottam (Chief Economist and Head of Policy Advocacy, Tata Sons Limited),  Shamika Ravi (Member, PM’s Economic Advisory Council), and Ritu Dewan (Vice President, Indian Society of Labour Economics) agreed that the Indian economy was slowing down and discussed the factors responsible for the slow growth. Besides, Union minister Nitin Gadkari expressed confidence in his government’s ability to bring the economy back up to speed whereas current minister of Railways and commerce Piyush Goyal led a panel discussion that dissected the Modi government’s recent reform measures aimed at improving the Indian economy.

Also, Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa spoke about the Balakot airstrike and fixing the problem of depleting fighter jets. Moreover, Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh defended the Modi government’s recent decisions with regards to J&K and emphasized on the need for the restriction imposed there. Another highlight was an argument between Shashi Tharoor and Swapan Dasgupta who scuffled over Hindutva, nationalism and a strong India.

Later in the day, Iltija Mufti, the daughter of former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti, hit out at the government for the preventive detentions of her mother, other Kashmiri leaders and for the restrictions imposed in the region.

The India Today Conclave 2019 also looked into mental health and wellness. Many brave teenagers came forward with their stories of depression, Neerja Birla spoke about how lack of awareness still comes in the way of tackling mental health and Yogi Cameron offered insights on how he left a high life to attain inner peace. The Day 1 of the Conclave also witnessed actor Vicky Kaushal who recalled his journey in Bollywood. The director-producer Karan Johar opened up about ruling Bollywood. Besides, actor Arjun Kapoor took the audience through decades of India cinema to analyze how the heroes of India have changed over the years.

India Today Conclave 2019: Day 2

The Day 2 of the India Today Conclave began with political discussions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assessed his term and explained why he believed he was the best man for the job. The next session was addressed by Shiv Sena’s youth president Aaditya Thackeray who shared his thoughts on how he planned to rewrite the Maharashtra playbook.

Shahid Kapoor, Kartina Kaif, Ekta Kapoor and Kriti Sanon and other Bollywood celebrities were also a part of the Day 2 of the India Today Conclave Mumbai.
