The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the Annual Player Contract list of Team India players. The players (senior men) have been divided into four different categories – A+ (₹7 crores), A (₹5 crores), B (₹3 crores) and C (₹1 crore). The absence of World Cup-winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni from BCCI’s contract list has caught the attention of the entire cricket community. There’s no mention of the only captain in the list of BCCI’s contracted players who won all ICC trophies. Fans have got emotional after their favourite cricketer was dropped from the central contract list of Team India players. They have started to worry about his retirement from international cricket.

MS Dhoni has not played any match for India since the 2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final defeat to New Zealand. He had retired from Test cricket in December 2014 after playing 90 matches and had stepped down as captain of India’s limited-overs formats teams in January 2017.

The former Indian skipper was part of Grade A in the BCCI’s central contracts list last year but after he had made himself unavailable since the World Cup, he was left out of the 27-member list for the period from October 2019 to September 2020. After the World Cup, Dhoni did not tour West Indies and did not play any match against Sri Lanka, South Africa, Bangladesh and West Indies. He was also not named in the ongoing 3-match ODI series against Australia and the T20I series in New Zealand which begins later this month.

Khaleel Ahmed, Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu are the other players who have been dropped from the list. In Dhoni’s absence, Rishabh Pant has been the wicketkeeper for India in T20Is and ODIs.

MS Dhoni has so far played 350 ODIs and 98 T20 Internationals. MS Dhoni had led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the 2013 Champions Trophy in England.

This year, India will play the T20 World Cup in Australia and there has been no mention of Dhoni in the annual contract list. Now it remains to be seen whether he will indeed play the World Cup or not.
