Jiah Khan Biography

British-American actress and singer in the Indian Film industry Jiah Khan was born on 20 February 1988 into a Muslim family in New York City, United States. She was brought up in London and her real name was Nafisa Rizvi Khan.

Jiah Khan always wanted to become an actress and therefore she moved to Mumbai to start a career in acting. She made her Bollywood debut in 2007 with Ram Gopal Verma film ‘Nishabd’ for which she also won the nomination for Best Female Debut at Filmfare Awards. After Nishabd, she acted in film ‘Ghajini’—the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2008—in which she played the role of a modern, independent woman. Her performance in the film was highly appreciated by the audience. Her last film was Sajid Khan’s romantic comedy ‘Housefull’, which was the fifth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2010.

Jiah was the daughter of Indian American businessman Ali Rizvi Khan and Hindi film actress Rabiya Amin. Jiah’s father left the family when she was just two-year-old and never came back. Her paternal aunts were Pakistani actresses Sangeeta and Kaveeta.

Jiah completed her Edexcel O Level and A Level with five As from London before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in Hindi film industry. She has two younger sisters Kavita and Karishma.

Jiah Khan was inspired by Ram Gopal Verma’s Bollywood film ‘Rangeela’ so much that she decided to make a career in Bollywood. She was only 6-year-old at that time.

She also studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Manhattan, though she quit upon receiving a film offer. Jiah was a very good dancer also and she learnt various dance forms like salsa, jazz, belly dancing, kathak, lambada, samba and reggae, and many more.

Jiah Khan Death Controversy

Jiah Khan was found hanging from a ceiling fan around 11:45 PM in her flat in Juhu on 3 June 2013. Khan’s sister found a six-page suicide note where it indicated that she wanted to end her life. Jiah’s suicide note soon went viral on social media in which she wrote about her relationship with Aditya Pancholi‘s son, Sooraj who was allegedly in a live-in relationship with Jiah Khan. She went on to speak about the troubles in their relationship and how broken she was after knowing that he cheated on her. She also mentioned in the letter how deeply she was hurt after getting an abortion done.

Sooraj Pancholi was taken into police custody during the investigation of her suicide note. Jiah’s mother, Rabia hired British forensic experts to dig deeper into the extreme step her daughter had taken. The forensic expert had suggested that the marks around Jiah’s face and neck suggest it wasn’t a suicide. Rabia also claimed that it wasn’t a suicide, but her daughter was murdered.

It’s been seven years since Jiah Khan has committed suicide but the case is still unsettled.  

On 8 June 2013, Khan’s memorial was held at Vile Parle Medical Club to pray for Jiah and her family. Bollywood actors in attendance included Aamir Khan, Randhir Kapoor, Prateik Babbar, Deepika Padukone, Sanjay Kapoor, Kiran Rao, Urvashi Dholakia, Shweta Pandit, Sanjay Khan, Nagma and many others.

As it has already been mentioned Jiah has appeared in three Bollywood films—Nishabd in 2007, Ghajini in 2008 and Housefull in 2010. Here’s a detailed look at the films of Jiah Khan.

Nishabd is an Indian drama film which was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The movie also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Revathi and Aftab Shivdasani in key roles. The film revolves around a relationship between Vijay Anand and his daughter’s 18-year-old friend Jia. The story of Nishabd took inspiration from the 1999 American film American Beauty and the 1986 Indian film Anokha Rishta.

Ghajini, the action, thriller film, was written and directed by A.R. Murugadoss and produced by Allu Aravind, Tagore Madhu and Madhu Mantena. The film starred Aamir Khan, Asin, Jiah Khan and Pradeep Rawat in lead roles. The film was a remake of Murugadoss’s own 2005 Tamil movie with the same name starring Suriya and Asin. The film was reported to be inspired by the 2000 film Memento and the 1951 film Happy Go Lovely.

Housefull is a Bollywood romantic, comedy film whichwas directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Riteish Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal and Jiah Khan in lead roles.
