Rohit Shetty Biography

Rohit Shetty was born on 14 March 1973 in Mumbai, Maharashtra to Bollywood junior artist, Ratna and actor-stuntman Mudhu Balwant Shetty who had acted in Hindi and Kannada films. His father was a popular villain and fight director of the 70s and was popularly known as ‘Fighter Shetty’. He has five siblings including three elder sisters Chanda Shetty, Chaya Shetty and Mahek Shetty and two stepbrothers Hriday Shetty and Uday Shetty.

Rohit completed his schooling from the St. Mary’s School in Santacruz, Mumbai and thereafter decided to become a film director. Shetty started working in Bollywood by assisting director Kuku Kohli for a daily salary of 1NR 35 in the 1991 action romance film Phool Aur Kaante starring Ajay Devgn, Madhoo, Aruna Irani, Jagdeep and Amrish Puri. His directorial debut with the 2003 action thriller film Zameen, which received negative commercial and critical feedback.

Most of the hit films in Shetty’s career had Ajay Devgn in a lead role. One of Shetty’s first hits was the 2006 comedy film Golmaal: Fun Unlimited starring Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, Tusshar Kapoor, Rimi Sen and Paresh Rawal. The film was followed by three other hits under the Golmaal franchise, crime comedy film Golmaal Returns in 2008, action comedy film Golmaal 3 in 2010 and supernatural action comedy film Golmaal Again in 2017 which all had Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi and Tusshar Kapoor in lead roles.

The top hit Shetty made ever since was the 2013 action comedy Chennai Express, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. The film was the highest-grossing Bollywood film in domestic markets and the third highest-grossing overseas. He also created some top hit films like 2009 comedy film All The Best: Fun Begins starring Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, 2012 action comedy film Bol Bachchan starring Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan, the Singham franchise action films Singham (2011) and Singham Returns (2014) both featuring Ajay Devgn in the lead role, 2015 romantic action comedy film Dilwale, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, and 2018 action film Simmba starring Ranveer Singh, Sonu Sood, Sara Ali Khan, Ashutosh Rana and Siddhartha Jadhav. The other films he directed were 2008 comedy thriller film Sunday and 2016 short / Tele ad film Ranveer Ching Returns.

His upcoming action film Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif was initially scheduled for release on 24 March 2020 but is indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. His other upcoming film Golmaal 5, which is the fifth sequel of the Golmaal franchise is announced to be released in 2021. He recently announced a remake of Raj N. Sippy’s 1982 action comedy film Satte Pe Satta.

Shetty won the 2013 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards India’s ‘Best Film’ Award for his 2013 film Chennai Express. In 2014, he won Star Box Office India Awards’ ‘Mr Box Office India Blockbuster’ for his 2014 film Singham Returns. He won Zee Cine Awards – 2013 ‘Power Club – Box Office Award’ for his 2012 film Bol Bachchan and Zee Cine Awards – 2018 ‘Best Film – Jury’s Choice Award’ for his 2017 film Golmaal Again.

In 2014, he was nominated as ‘Best Director’ at Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Producers Guild Film Awards and Bollywood Hungama Surfers’ Choice Movie Awards for his 2013 film Chennai Express. His 2017 film Golmaal Returns was nominated for ‘Best Film – Viewers’ Choice Award’ at Zee Cine Awards. As a film producer, Shetty along with Arbaaz Khan received Filmfare Best Movie Award and National Film Award for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’ for Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s 2010 action comedy film Dabangg.

Rohit Shetty Personal Life

Shetty is married to Maya Shetty since 2005. They have a son Ishaan. There were rumours that Shetty was in a relationship with Indian film and television actress Prachi Desai during the making of the film Bol Bachchan in 2012. However, they both didn’t want to respond to these rumours.

Shetty has an own production house Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Limited under which he produced his directorial films like Golmaal (2006), Sunday (2008), Golmaal Returns (2008), Golmaal – 3 (2010) and Bol Bachchan (2012).
