The Indian economist and politician, Jairam Ramesh celebrated his 66th birthday this year on April 9. Jairam Ramesh, who belongs to Indian National Congress party, is currently a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Karnataka state.

Jairam Ramesh Biography

Jairam Ramesh was born on April 9, 1954, in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, India. C. K. Ramesh and Sridevi Ramesh. His father was a Professor of Civil Engineering in Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.

Jairam Ramesh attended Classes 3 to 5 at St. Xavier’s School in Ranchi from 1961 to 1963. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1975. He also pursued a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College from 1975 to 1977. During 1977–78, he did a Doctoral program from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He had plans to attend a newly established interdisciplinary technology policy programme at MIT on technology policy, economics, engineering, and management, but he had to quit due to some unavoidable needs at family. He is a founding member of the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad and is a member of the International Council of the New York-based Asia Society. Ramesh has been a Visiting Fellow and Affiliated Researcher of the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi, since 2002.

Jairam Ramesh started his career in 1978 by working in the World Bank for a short assignment. On December 1979, he returned to India and joined as an assistant to economist and civil servant Lovraj Kumar at the Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices. He served as an Officer on Special Duty in the Advisory Board of Energy from 1983 to 1985 and later worked in the Planning Commission as an advisor to Abid Hussain in the Ministry of Industry and other economic departments of the Central Government. He served as an Officer on Special Duty in VP Singh’s National Front government in 1990 and reorganised India’s international trade agencies. In 1991, he was appointed as Officer on Special Duty to the Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, but was removed from PMO within few weeks and was appointed as OSD to the then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh. Ramesh was the advisor to the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 1992 to 1994, served on a special mission to Jammu and Kashmir from 1993 to 1995 and was an advisor to Finance Minister P. Chidambaram from 1996 to 1998. Jairam is the founding member of the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad and is a member of the International Council of the New York-based Asia Society. Since 2002, he has been a Visiting Fellow and Affiliated Researcher of the Institute of Chinese Studies in New Delhi.

Jairam started his political career in 2000 as the Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board of the Government of Karnataka. In 2004, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Adilabad constituency in Andhra Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha and was subsequently elected as a Member of the Committee on Finance Member. He was appointed a member of the National Advisory Council of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2004.

He was appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Power in 2008 and later in 2009, he became the Minister of State with Independent Charge in the Ministry of Environment and Forests. He served as a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Global Warming and Climate Change in 2010. He was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha representing Adilabad constituency for the second consecutive term in 2010. In 2011, he was appointed as the Minister of Rural Development and as the Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation in additional Charge in the newly formed Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. He was appointed as a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Millennium Development Goals in 2013. In 2014, he was appointed as a member of Committee on Health and Family Welfare and Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. In June 2016, he was elected to Rajya Sabha for the third term to represent Karnataka. In 2018, he was appointed as a member of the Select Committee of Rajya Sabha on the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment) Bill.

Jairam Ramesh Personal Life

Jairam married K. R. Jayashree on 26 January 1981. Unfortunately, Jayashree died in 2019. Jairam currently stays at Lodi Gardens at Rajesh Pilot Marg in New Delhi. He lived in Khairatabad in Hyderabad, Telangana before he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in July 2016. Jairam describes himself as a ‘Hind-Budh’ as he practises the Hindu religion and also believes in Buddhist philosophy. Jairam was moved by Jawaharlal Nehru’s liberal, humanist, rational approach to life since his childhood. He regards himself to be influenced by Nehru’s and Mahatma Gandhi’s ideologies in many ways.
