The popular stand-up comedian, television presenter, actor and producer, Kapil Sharma, celebrated his 39th birthday this year on April 2. Kapil is known for hosting The Kapil Sharma Show and television comedy shows Comedy Nights with Kapil and Family Time with Kapil.

Kapil Sharma Biography

Kapil Sharma was born on April 2, 1981, in Amritsar, Punjab to Jeetendra Kumar Punj, a head constable in Punjab Police and Janak Rani, a homemaker. Kapil attended Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School in Amristar and later went to Hindu College in Amritsar. He graduated from Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar and is featured in the list of prominent alumni of the college. Kapil has an elder brother Ashok Kumar Sharma, who is a Police constable and a sister named Pooja Pawan Devgan.

Kapil’s early step in his career was by contesting in MH One’s Punjabi show Hasde Hasaande Ravo. He gained popularity after winning Star One TV’s comedy reality show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. He won a cash prize of INR ₹10 lakh for the show produced by Endemol India. He later moved to Mumbai for seeking opportunities in playback singing. He hosted Colors TV’s comedy show Chhote Miyan from 2008 and between 2008 and 2009 contested in Star One’s TV reality shows Laughter Knights, Sony TV’s Ustaadon Ka Ustaad and Star One’s Hans Baliye.

Kapil was one of the judges of Sony Entertainment Television’s Comedy Circus 3 Ka Tadka in 2009 and Comedy Circus Mahasangram in 2010. He participated in Sony Entertainment Television’s Comedy Circus from 2010 to 2013 and won six seasons Comedy Circus Ke SuperStars (2010), Comedy Circus Ka Jadoo (2010), Jubilee Comedy Circus (2010-2011), Comedy Circus Ke Taansen (2011), Comedy Circus Ka Naya Daur (2011) and Kahani Comedy Circus Ki (2011-2012). In 2010, he performed in Sony TV’s comedy show Comedy Ka Daily Soap and in 2011 he contested in Zee TV’s Star Ya Rockstar.

Kapil hosted Colors TV’s popular dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6 in 2013. In 2013, Kapil launched his show, Comedy Nights with Kapil produced by K9 Productions and aired on Colors TV till 2016. In 2014, he was seen as a guest on the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 8 on Sony Entertainment Television, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan as well as on the popular talk show on Colors TV’s The Anupam Kher Show Episode 7 hosted by Anupam Kher.

Kapil alongside Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt hosted the 60th Filmfare Awards held on 31 January 2015 at the Yash Raj Studio in Mumbai.

He hosted the Star Guild Award in 2015, 22nd Star Screen Awards in 2016 and 61st Filmfare Awards along with Shah Rukh Khan in 2016. He appeared as a host and comedy performer on The Kapil Sharma Show Season 1 from 2016 to 2017. In 2017, he along with Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan hosted the 62nd Filmfare Awards. In the same year, he appeared as a guest on Star World India’s talk show Koffee with Karan 5, hosted by Karan Johar, Colors TV’s reality series Bigg Boss 11 hosted by Salman Khan, Sony Entertainment Television dance reality series Super Dancer Chapter 2 and Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs that was a subseries of singing competition series Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Kapil received Indian Television Academy Awards’ Best Actor – Comedy in 2012 for his performance in the comedy shows Kahani Comedy Circus Ki on Sony Entertainment Television. In 2013 he won Indian Television Academy Awards’ Best Actor – Comedy for Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors TV and Funniest Serial – Comedy for Comedy Nights with Kapil, CNN-IBN Indian of the Year’s ‘Entertainer of the Year’ and BIG Star Entertainment Awards’ Most Entertaining Comedy Show for Comedy Nights with Kapil.

He won Star Guild Awards’ Best Comedy Show in 2014 for Comedy Nights with Kapil, Sony Guild Film Awards’ Promising Debut – Male in 2015 for his performance in the film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, Indian Television Academy Awards’ Best Actor – Comedy in 2015 for Comedy Nights with Kapil, Gold Awards’ Best Comedy Show in 2019 for The Kapil Sharma Show and Indian Television Academy Awards’ Best Comedy Show in 2019 for Comedy Genius. In 2019, he entered the World book of Records (London) for the ‘Most Viewed Stand-up Comedian’.

Kapil Sharma Personal Life

Kapil married comedian and entrepreneur Ginni Chatrath at Jalandhar, Punjab on December 12, 2018. They have a daughter Anayra Sharma. During his college education, he used to direct plays for his pocket money. He was also a scholarship holder and a national-level winner in theatre. His father was diagnosed with cancer in 1997 and died in 2004 at AIIMS in Delhi. Kapil didn’t have the money to attend an acting course, however, by recognising his great talent many institutions came forward to sponsor his acting course.
