Beni Prasad Verma Biography
An Indian politician and a member of the Indian National Congress political party, Beni Prasad Verma commemorated his 79th birthday this year. His natal day falls on 11th February 1941. Hailing from Sirauli, Uttar Pradesh, he was born to father Mohan Lal Verma and mother Ramkali in a Kurmi family. He finished B.A. (Bachelors of Arts) and L.L.B. (Bachelor of Law) from Lucknow University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. His leisure interest includes Reading Books/Newspaper and Listening News Bulletin. He likes playing chess, too. He loves wearing Kurta Pajama and his favourite colour is white. He has visited several countries such as China, Singapore, France, Germany, Switzerland and U.K.
On 20th May 1956, he tied the knot with Malti Devi at the age of 15 and the couple was blessed with three sons and two daughters.
In 1974, he instigated his political career by becoming MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly).
Beni Prasad Verma laid the foundation of educational institutions like Chaudhary Charan Singh Mahavidyalay at Bardari near Badosarai and Mahanlal Verma Educational Institute in his home district of Barabanki.
Beni Prasad Verma Political Career
Leading politician Beni Prasad lastly served as a Union Cabinet Minister of Steel in Manmohan Singh Government from July 2011 onwards. He had served as the Public Works department minister for the State of Uttar Pradesh in India from 1989-91 and 1993-94. He held the position of the Union Communications Minister in Deve Gowda’s cabinet from 1996-98. After being elected in the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996, he was reintroduced in the 12th Lok Sabha for his second term in 1998, for the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999 and for the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004 from Kaiserganj constituency. In 2009, he was revived for the 5th term of 15th Lok Sabha from Gonda Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh state as an Indian National Congress candidate.
He was again allianced with Samajwadi party in 2016.
He became a talk of the debate after using impolite language in his public and personal life. He made critical comments against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee by calling him ‘man of low stands’ during a debate session in Lok Sabha in 2009 which developed serious turmoil amongst BJP leaders. They requested an apology from the opposition party and suspended the parliament till then. After denying the atonement by Verma, Home Minister P Chidambaram apologised for the inappropriate remark made by his fellow member of his ruling coalition.
During the Uttar Pradesh elections in February 2012, Verma provoked EC to incarcerate him by promulgating the statement that Muslim quota will be hiked. He delivered this statement during a campaign in Kaimganj in the presence of Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh and Union law and minority affairs minister Salman Khurshid. Khurshid got into a squabble by speaking on nine per cent sub-quota for Muslims even if the Election Commission says it’s against the guideline to promise such a thing during the elections.
On 19th August 2012, the minister again made a questionable remark in Barabanki by saying that ‘With the increasing price levels, the farmers are benefitting. He was happy with the price hike of Dal, atta and vegetables through which farmers were reaping benefits.
On 15th October 2012, he made a statement by denying the fact of having Rs.71 lakh stolen by Salman Khurshid which was a very small amount for a central minister. He said, had it been Rs. 71 crore, he would have taken it seriously. His statements were grossly untimely and ill-phrased.
On 13th December 2012, he again made an argumentative remark urging life imprisonment for Afzal Guru instead of the punishment of being legally killed.
He again made an impolite remark against Kumar Vishwas when asked about fielding against Rahul Gandhi in the election from Rahul Gandhi’s home place Amethi. He said that he is nothing but a joker and should join the jokers instead.
