Maha Saptami which is also known as Saptami of Durgapuja is one of the important days of Durga Puja celebrations. The Maha Puja (also known as Great Ceremony) starts on Maha Saptami.
Durga Puja is a Hindu festival and is celebrated across the country with the worship of Goddess Durga who protects us from all the evil forces and gives immense happiness, luck, and prosperity in life. On this day we worship the ten-armed mother goddess and celebrate her victory over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura.
Apparently, the world was under great threat from the demon Mahishasura, that no God could defeat him. To vanquish the demon, Durga emerged from the collective energies of all the gods. Each of her ten arms brandished the deadliest weapon of each god.
The Maha Saptami begins with the bathing ceremony of Navapatrika. Here, the nine plants (banana, pomegranate, turmeric, jayanti, ashoke, bel, arum plant, colacassia and paddy) are all tied together with a sacred thread and are taken to the river Ganges at pre-dawn for bathing.
Now, here the question arises what is the significance of these nine plants? So, during the war, Devi Durga created ‘Ashtanayika’ (eight goddesses for war). These eight Goddesses of war and Devi herself symbolize “NavDurga”. Here, the nine plants stand for each impression of the Goddess.
Bathing ceremony cannot be complete without Maha Snan. Goddess Durga is treated as a dearest daughter and to perform the Maha Snan, a mirror is placed in a way that proper reflection of Goddess Durga can be seen in the mirror. After that, the mirror is given a ritualistic bath which is known as Maha Snan.
Another ritual known as Pran Pratishtha is performed after that in which water is placed in a vessel and is kept before the Goddess. A bunch of coconut leaves (5 leaves) are placed inside the vessel. It is believed that the priest consecrate the Goddess on that vessel with divine chants and hymns. Then the goddess is worshipped with sixteen special puja items.
On this auspicious day of Maha Saptami, Sacred meal (Bhog) is prepared in which special dishes are offered to the Goddess which is then distributed among the devotees as Prasad.
Pandals are set and are illuminated with beautiful lights and garlands.
It is believed that, on the day of Maha Saptami, Maha Puja begins and devotees also perform Kalratri Puja.
