Bhagat Singh’s Ideals and Opinions
Bhagat Singh’s ideal was Kartar Singh Sarabha— the founding-member of the Ghadar Party. He regarded him as his hero. Bhagat Singh was also inspired by Bhai Parmanand, who was also the founding member of Ghadar Party.
Singh was drawn to communism and anarchism and was an avid reader of the teachings of Mikhail Bakunin. Besides, he read Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and Leon Trotsky. In his last testament, “To Young Political Workers”, he declared his ideal as the Social reconstruction on new, that is, Marxist, basis.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh never believed in the Gandhian ideology, which supported Satyagraha and other forms of non-violent resistance.
In addition, Bhagat Singh published a series of articles on anarchism in Kirti. He was worried that the public misunderstood the concept of anarchism. He wrote that the people were scared of the word anarchism. The word anarchism had been abused so much that even in India revolutionaries had been called anarchist to make them unpopular. He also explained that anarchism referred to the absence of a ruler and abolition of the state, not the absence of order. Singh also said once that he though in India the idea of universal brotherhood, the Sanskrit sentence vasudhaiva Kutumbakam etc., had the same meaning.
Bhagat Singh firmly believed that the ultimate goal of Anarchism is complete independence, according to which no one would be obsessed with God or religion, nor would anybody be greedy for money or other desires. There would be no chains on the body or control by the state.
