Pooja Bhatt, the acclaimed Indian actress who is also popular as a director, voice-over artist, modelling artist and film maker celebrated her 48th birthday on 24th February. She is born to predominantly Gujarati descendant Mahesh Bhatt and Kiran Bhatt (born Loraine Bright) of Scottish, Armenian and Burmese ancestry in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her career in Bollywood industry spans across acting, direction and production. In an interview with a website she said that her favourite places to visit are Dubai and Goa. In 2003, she married her long-time affair, Munish Makhija a Channel V host, and a Goa based restaurant owner. Pooja has a younger brother, Rahul Bhatt and two step sisters Shaheen Bhatt and actress Alia Bhatt. Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi and director Mohit Suri are her cousins. In her childhood days Pooja wished to become an astronaut, though as her family was much rooted in the Bollywood Industry, she gradually gained the passion for acting and cinema as she grew up. Renowned Bollywood directors late Nanabhai Bhatt and late Balwant Bhatt were Pooja’ uncles.

Pooja Bhatt started her acting career at the age of 17 through the TV film ‘Daddy’ directed by her father Mahesh Bhatt in 1989. The character of an alienated daughter of an alcoholic father that she played in the film made her receive the Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year 1991. The musical hit film Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin opposite Aamir Khan in 1991 was her big screen debut and one of her biggest solo hits. The film was a remake of the Oscar-winning Hollywood classic ‘It Happened One Night’. In 1997 she received the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues for her maiden production film ‘Tamanna’ under Pooja Bhatt Productions. Thought the film didn’t perform well in the Indian box office or gain audience appeal. In 1999, she won Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration for her third production film ‘Zakhm’. In 2004, she was nominated by Zee Cine Awards for the Best Debuting Director for the film ‘Paap’. Her last appearance was in ‘Everybody says I’m fine!’ in 2001. She received several awards including two National Film Awards and Filmfare Award Lux New Face of the Year for Best Female Debut. She appeared in a documentary film titled ‘Sunset Bollywood’ in which she talks about her past heartthrob in real life. She also continues to produce and direct films and make short appearances in TV shows that encourages young talents.
From the early period of her acting career itself she always preferred to used her actual names or names similar to her actual names for the character. In the films including Daddy, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi, Sadak, Saatwan Aasman, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee, Sir, Kranti Kshetra, Kalloori Vaasal, Gunehgar, Chaahat and Angaarey the first name of of her character was Pooja. Pooja got the offer in the lead actress role in the Megahit movie Aashique though she rejected the offer as her boyfriend didn’t allow. The have been in affair since Pooja was 12 years and they started dating at her age of 17. After playing roles in 2 super hit Bollywood films, she had to compromise on her career for taking the relationship further. Though she was at the peak of her career in during the 1990s so had to stay away from the industry for over a decade.
Pooja Bhatt will be playing a role in the upcoming film Sadak 2 which is a sequel of the 1991 film Sadak. The film is also a comeback for her father Mahesh Bhatt as a director and her uncle Mukesh Bhatt as a producer under their banner Vishesh films in partnership with Fox Star Studios will have Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapoor along with Pooja as the main cast.
