28th July 2020 is the 36th Birthday of Venkatesh Prabhu, better known by his stage name ‘Dhanush’. An Indian actor, producer, director, writer, lyricist, screenwriter and playback singer who works predominantly in the Tamil industry, Dhanush is acclaimed for his excellence in all aspects he approached in his respective film industry.
Dhanush Biography
Dhanush was born at Theni in Tamil Nadu, India to Tamil film director and producer Kasthuri Raja and Vijayalakshmi. In 2004, Dhanush married Aishwarya, the daughter of actor Rajinikanth, the hailed Superstar or Thalaivaa (leader) in Tamil film industry. Dhanush’s directorial debut ‘Power Pandi’ was released on 14th April 2017. He was nominated to become the brand ambassador of PETA with the title of India’s Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2011. His contributions to the WWF in supporting Earth Hour 2012 has been instrumental in spreading awareness among the public. He also owns a production house named Wunderbar under which he produced 19 Tamil films, 1 Hindi film, 1 Telugu film, and 1 Malayalam film. Dhanush has acted in 44 films over his career and has won 3 National Film Awards, 9 Vijay Awards, 7 Filmfare Awards South, 5 Vikatan Awards and 5 Edison Awards.
Dhanush Career
Dhanush entered acting after being advised by his brother Selvaraghavan who is a director in the Tamil film industry. Dhanush made his acting debut with the 2002 film Thulluvadho Ilamai directed by his father Kasthuri Raja, for which he got positive reviews from critics and the public. In 2003 he appeared in his brother Selvaraghavan’s debut directorial film Kadhal Kondein. The film became a major commercial success and gave a breakthrough in Dhanush’s career. In 2003 itself he acted in his third film, Thiruda Thirudi. In the early stage of his acting career, he appeared in films including ‘Pudhukottayilirundhu Saravanan’ directed by S S Stanley, ‘Sullan’ directed by Ramana. After receiving a positive response for his appearance in the film ‘Dreams’ directed by his father he acted in the film ‘Devathaiyai Kanden’, directed by Bhoopathy Pandian and ‘Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam’ directed by Balu Mahendra.
In 2006, Dhanush acted in the ‘Pudhupettai’ another film directed by his brother Selvaraghavan. The film reunited the brothers in the industry and Dhanush’s acting received great appreciation by the critics. With his appearance in the 2006 commercial entertainer film Thiruvilayadal Arambal, directed by Boopathy Pandian, Dhanush gained stardom in the industry. The next film ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’ directed by debutant Mithran Jawahar was a remake of a Telugu film directed by his brother Selvaraghavan. His cameo appearance in his father-in-law Rajnikanth’s venture ‘Kuselan’ was followed by Suraj’s Padikathavan for which his performance received great appreciation. After that, he acted in the films ‘Kutty’ and ‘Uthama Puthiran’, both in collaboration with director Mithran Jawahar.
Dhanush Top Hits
Most of Dhanush’s top hit films happened between the year 2011 and 2016. His first release in 2011 ‘Aadukalam’ was his second film in collaboration with director Vetrimaran. They described the film as their dream project and took over three years to shoot it. The film in which Dhanush played the role of a cockfighter gained positive response from the public and won six awards at the 58th National Film Awards with Dhanush receiving the National Film Award for Best Actor and becoming the youngest actor to receive the award. His other films that got released in 2011 were Subramania Siva’s ‘Seedan’, in which he appears in an extended guest appearance, Suraj’s ‘Mappillai’, a remake of the Rajasekhar 1989 film ‘Mappillai’ starring Rajinikanth in lead role and Hari’s ‘Venghai’ which received mixed reviews but was a commercial success. Dhanush’s third film in collaboration with his brother Selvaraghavan was ‘Mayakkan Enna’ which got released in 2011. The film in which Richa Gangopadhyay was cast along with Dhanush also received positive reviews.
In 2012, Dhanush’s only release was the film ‘3’, directed by his wife Aishwarya Rajinikanth and Shruti Haasan cast along with him. The film which had the popular song “Why this Kolaveri Di” sung by Dhanush in it gained moderate success at the box office. In 2013, his first release was the film ‘Maryan’ in which he was cast along with Parvathy. The film received great critical applause but was just a below-average grosser at the box office.
Dhanush made his debut in Bollywood with Aanand L. Rai’s ‘Raanjhaana’ in which he was cast along with Sonam Kapoor and background score composed by AR Rahman. The film which released on 21st June 2013 with the Tamil dubbed version ‘Ambikapathy’ released a week later grossed over 1350 million INR worldwide. His first release in 2014, and 25 films in his entire career, R. Velraj’s ‘Velaiyilla Pattathari’ mostly receive a positive response and did well at the box office. His first release in 2015, R. Balki’s ‘Shamitabh’ was also his second Hindi film. The film received positive reviews and was appreciated for its concept but didn’t become a box office success. His next film was KV Anand’s 2015 psychological thriller ‘Anegan’ which also received a positive response and also become a commercial success. His other films in the year were Balaji Mohan’s action-comedy ‘Maari’, Velraj’s drama ‘Thanga Magan’, Prabhu Solomon’s action thriller ‘Thodari’, and R.S. Durai Senthilkumar’s political action thriller ‘Kodi’.
Velaiyilla Pattathari 2 directed by his sister-in-law Soundarya Rajinikanth was his first film in 2017 as a lead actor. His releases in 2019 Vetrimaran’s ‘VadaChennai’ received great appreciation and Balaji Mohan’s Maari-2, a sequel to Maari got mixed reviews. His major release in 2019 Vetrimaaran’s action drama Asuran received critical appreciation and was a commercial success. His next release in 2019, Gautham Menon’s romantic thriller ‘Enai Noki Paayum Thota’ was delayed released due to financial problems though it received positive reviews.
