Tarun Gogoi, the Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Assam, celebrated his 84th Birthday on October 11, this year. He has been a member of the Indian National Congress and led the party to a record three consecutive electoral victories in Assam. On 18 May 2016, he completed 15 consecutive years as Chief Minister of Assam.
Tarun Gogoi Biography
Gogoi was born on 11 October 1936 into an ethnic Assamese Tai-Ahom family at Rangajan Tea Estate in Rangamati in Jorhat, Assam. His father is Late Dr Kamaleshwar Gogoi, who was a medical practitioner at Rangajan Tea Estate and his mother is Late Usha Gogoi, was the younger sister of the renowned poet Ganesh Gogoi. Tarun attended the No.26 Rangajan Nimna Buniyadi Vidyalaya School, Jorhat Madrassa School where he studied up to class IV. As his family moved to Badulipar Tea Estate, he later attended Bholaguri High School, where he studied till class VI. In 1949, he was admitted at the Jorhat Government High School, from where he passed the HSLC Examination. Tarun graduated from Jagannath Barooah College in Jorhat, Assam and pursued LLB from Gauhati University, Assam.
Tarun Gogoi Political Career
Tarun Gogoi started his political career in 1968 as a member of the Municipal Board in Jorhat. In 1971, he was elected to the 5th Lok Sabha and in 1976, he became the joint secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC). He was re-elected to the 6th Lok Sabha for the second time in 1977, and for the third time in 1983. In 1983, he was re-appointed as the Joint Secretary of All India Congress Committee, and in 1985, he became the general secretary.
He chaired as the President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Assam as well as the vice president P.C.C. (I), Assam from 1986 to 1990. He served as the Union Minister of State with Independent Charge in the Ministry of Food from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, he was elected as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly and got appointed as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) in Ministry of Food Processing Industry which he served till 1995. In 1997, he was re-elected as a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly which he continued till 1998. From 1998 to 1999, he served as a Member of the Committee on Government Assurances, Committee on External Affairs. Consultative Committee, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He was re-elected to the 12th Lok Sabha for the fifth term in 1998 and to the 23rd Lok Sabha for the sixth term in 1999. In 1999, he was appointed as a member of the Committee for Railways.
Tarun was appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam for the first time on May 18, 2001, and in September 2001 he was elected as Member of Assam Legislative Assembly. On May 11, 2006, he re-elected as the Member of Assam Legislative Assembly and on May 14, he assumed the position of Chief Minister of Assam for the second term. He was re-elected as a Member of Assam Legislative Assembly on May 13, 2011, and was assumed the position of Chief Minister of Assam for the third term on May 18, 2011. In the 2016 elections, which he contested for the last time from Titabar LAC and was elected as MLA.
Tarun Gogoi Achievements
Besides his political career, Tarun held many other positions including the director of Vayudoot, member of Bar Council, Assam, Chairman of Assam Small Scale Industries Development Corporation, Vice-President of J.B. College Students Union and Assam Inter college Students union, Joint Secretary of Jorhat Law College and also served as a Commander in Students Volunteer Corps.
Tarun has also been served various social and cultural organisations. He was the treasurer of All Assam Moina Parijat and Children’s Organisations and Chairman or Bharat Yuvak Samaj.
Tarun Gogoi Personal Life
On July 30 1972, Tarun married Dolly Gogoi a post-graduate in Zoology from Gauhati University. They have a daughter Chandrima, and a son, Gaurav Gogoi, a member of parliament from Kaliabar, who holds a degree in Public Administration from New York University.
Tarun is designated as an alumnus of the prestigious Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat. He was fondly called by his parents, as ‘Punakon’. His favourite hobbies are reading and gardening. His mother Usha Gogoi was known for her collection of poetry, Hiyar Samahar (Heart’s Treasures). His favourite sports are cricket, football, golf and tennis. He is a travel enthusiast who has travelled widely across many countries in his political career as well as with family.
Tarun has recently been in the news regarding his plans for Congress and the All India United Democratic Front to propose a joint candidate for one of the three upcoming Rajya Sabha seats. He also raised his voice in the anti-CAA protests in Assam. He said that the protest is being led by those who believe in the teachings of Gita and Vedas and the ideals of Srimanta Sankardeva and Mahatma Gandhi.
