The acclaimed Indian dance choreographer, film director, producer and actor Prabhu Deva celebrated his 47th birthday this year on April 3. Prabhu Deva has choreographed and starred in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu language films. He is the recipient of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, in 2019 for his contributions to the art.
Prabhu Deva is the director of the upcoming film Radhe starring Salman Khan, Disha Patani, Jackie Shroff and Randeep Hooda. The film, which is a sequel to the 2009 film Wanted, is produced by Salman Khan along with Sohail Khan and Atul Agnihotri. The film was announced to be released in theatres by 22 May 2020.
Prabhu Deva Biography
Prabhu Deva was born on April 3, 1973, in Mysore, Karnataka to Mugur Sundar and Mahadevamma Sundar. Raju Sundaram and Nagendra Prasad are his brothers. He has two brothers, Raju Sundaram and Nagendra Prasad. His father Mugur Sundar was a choreographer in South Indian films. After being inspired by his father, he went on to get trained in Bharatanatyam from Dharmaraj and Udupi Lakshminarayanan as well as Western styles.
Prabhu Deva’s first appearance was as a boy playing the flute in the song “Panivizhum Iravu”, from Mani Ratnam’s 1986 film Mouna Ragam starring Mohan and Revathi in lead roles. In 1988 he appeared as a background dancer for a song in Mani Ratnam’s action film Agni Natchathiram starring Prabhu, Karthik, Amala and Nirosha in lead roles. He made his debut as a choreographer in 1989 with Prathap K. Pothan’s action film Vetri Vizha starring Kamal Haasan, Prabhu, Sasikala and Kushboo in lead roles, He then went into acting and also choreographed for over 100 movies since then.

After appearing in several songs from Tamil films, Prabhu Deva made his debut in a lead role in 1994 with Pavithran’s romantic drama film Indhu alongside actress Roja and Sarathkumar. His dancing skills were featured in the song sequences, with ‘gaana’ and disco music which was also followed in other films he later appeared. A breakthrough in his acting career was Shankar’s sophomore film, the romantic drama Kadhalan in 1994, in which he played the role of a young student who stands up against his lover’s father and then against an international terrorist. The film that won four National Film Awards, had popular songs like “Mukkabla” and “Urvasi Urvasi” which was a combination of A. R. Rahman‘s music and Prabhu Deva’s choreography. The film which was the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year, established Prabhu Deva as a bankable actor in other regional industries.
He eventually got the opportunity to work in two other big-budget films in 1996, with music by Rahman, Love Birds and Mr Romeo, both were popular for the music and dance portions. The film Love Birds received a wide theatrical release in overseas destinations and Prabhu Deva was praised by critics for his portrayal. For his appearance in a double role alongside Shilpa Shetty and Madhoo Deva in the film Mr Romeo, Deva charged a comparatively high remuneration of ₹6 million.
Deva received critical acclaim for his role in Rajiv Menon’s romantic drama film Minsara Kanavu in 1997, starring alongside Arvind Swamy and Kajol. He was next seen in Sabapathy Dekshinamurthy’s romantic comedy film VIP in 1997, alongside Abbas, Simran and Rambha.

He later appeared in Thangar Bachan’s 2017 film Kalavaadiya Pozhuthugal, Kalyaan’s 2018 action comedy film Gulaebaghavali by silent film, Karthik Subbaraj’s 2018 horror thriller film Mercury and A. L. Vijay’s 2018 musical dance film Lakshmi, Sakthi Chidambaram’s 2019 comedy film Charlie Chaplin 2. He also debuted as a lyricist in the film which was a sequel to 2002 film Charlie Chaplin. He was next seen in A. L. Vijay 2019 horror comedy film Devi 2, which was a sequel of Devi.

Prabhu Deva won the National Film Award’s Best Choreography in Tamil in 1996 for the song “Vennilave” from the film Minsara Kanavu and National Film Awards’ Best Choreography in Hindi in 2004 for the film Lakshya. He won Nandi Awards’ Best Choreography in Telugu in 2004 for the film Varsham, Filmfare Awards’ Best Choreography – Hindi in 2005 for the film Lakshya, Filmfare Awards South’s Best Choreography – Telugu in 2005 for the film Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana and Vijay Awards’ Favourite Director – Tamil in 2007 for the film Pokkiri.
Prabhu Deva Personal Life
Prabhu Deva married Ramlatha in 1995. They had three children, but their eldest son died of cancer in 2008. In 2010, Ramlatha filed a petition at the family court against Prabhu Deva’s live-in relationship with actress Nayanthara and requested a reunion with him. In 2012, Nayantara confirmed that she had ended her relationship with Prabhu Deva.
Deva serves as the chairman and director of the Prabhu Deva’s Dance Academy in Singapore. Prabhu Deva along with Shobhana and A. R. Rahman has performed dancing troupe based of the Tamil film industry at the “MJ & Friends”, a tribute concert to Michael Jackson in Munich, Germany in 1999.
