D. V. Sadananda Gowda Biography
A gentle Indian political leader and the erstwhile 20th Chief Minister of Karnataka, Devaragunda Venkappa Sadananda Gowda has stepped into the 67th year of his life. Earlier, he served as the Minister of Railways and the Minister of Law and Justice in the Indian Government. He is a member of Bharatiya Janta Party. He also acted as the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation at the end of the previous Lok Sabha. Presently, he is acting as the Union Cabinet Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Indian Government under the second Modi Ministry in which he represented the Bangalore North constituency.
Hailing from Tulu Gowda family, D.V. Sadananda Gowda was born to father Venkappa Gowda and mother Kamala Gowda on March 18, 1953, in Mandekolu village of Sulya taluk in Karnataka. He pursued his Bachelors in Science from Saint Philomena College, Puttur and after concluding his graduation, he acquired a degree of law from Vaikunta Baliga College of Law and was chosen as General Secretary of the Students Union of the Law College. Eventually, he emerged as the District General Secretary of the Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
Later in Sullia and Puttur, he emerged as a practising advocate. Due to his interest in social service, he relinquished his job and united with politics for people’s evolution.
D. V. Sadananda Gowda Political Career
D.V. Sadananda Gowda instigated his career with Jan Sangh and was accompanied with BJP afterwards. He served as a BJP Yuva Morcha Secretary for five years from 1983 to 1988. In 1994 and 1999, he was chosen to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Puttur constituency in Dakshin Kannada and served for two terms.
In 2004, he emerged as the State BJP Secretary and the National Secretary of the party. He was chosen in the 14th Lok Sabha from the Mangalore constituency and beat Veerappa Moily of the Indian National Congress with a difference of 32,314 votes. During January 2005, he was designated as Director of Coffee Board by the Government of India. In 2006, he was designated as Karnataka State BJP President and garnered National prominence when BJP triumphed as assembly election in South India in May 2008 for the first time.
Before being appointed as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, he was chosen to the 15th Lok Sabha from Udupi Chikmagalur assembly seat. In August 2011 he sworn-in as the 20th Karnataka Chief Minister for one year following the resignation of his mentor B.S. Yeddyurappa in an illegal mining case. After taking over the post of CM, he put in his endeavours to clean the party’s tarnished image and confronted a lot of revolution within the party. He instigated several schemes like Sakaala which pointed at providing time-bound services at government offices. He resigned when he realised the non-consolidation of the party and made a way for Jagadish Shettar in July 2012. In 2013, he was chosen as the opposition leader of Karnataka Legislative Council. But destiny had something else for him. On 26th May 2014 he vowed as Minister of Railways in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s newly elected government and on July 8, 2014, he presented his maiden Railway Budget in the Parliament.
Later, on 30 May 2019, he took oath as a cabinet minister in Modi’s second term government and was given the charge of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

D. V. Sadananda Gowda Personal Life
D.V. Sadananda exchanged conjugal vows with Datty Sadananda in 1981 and the couple was blessed with two sons. His eldest son Kaushik, who was a medical student, lost his life in a road mishap near Puttur in 2003 and younger son Karthik Gowda is a businessman.
His leisure interests include chatting with family members and friends. Although he plays badminton and tennis, he is proficient in playing kho-kho and represented Mysore University at the national level. Besides, he is a great admirer of Janapada and cultural activities. Also, he is fond of ‘Yakshagana Folk Art popular in Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka and has also participated in it. He has visited several countries like Australia, Dubai, Moldova, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore and the USA.
