Bhai Dooj Significance

Bhai Dooj 2019 will be commemorated on 29th October, second day of the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month which falls between October and November, according to the Gregorian calendar. This is the most eminent and mythical festival to be celebrated all across India among all the brothers and sisters. On this auspicious day, sisters pray to God for longevity, well-being and abundance of their brothers. After Raksha Bandhan, this is another festival which strengthen the bond of this relationship of brothers and sisters.

There is an exceptional understanding between them. They are the protectors for each other, best friends for each other, caretakers of each other, followers of each other, secret-sharers of each other and has unconditional love for each other. After the two days of Diwali festival, Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated among Hindus of India, Nepal and other countries. In the southern parts of India, it is celebrated as “Yam Dwitiya”.

The origin of this auspicious day is related to the Hindu mythological based stories. According to one folklore, when Lord Krishna destroyed the evil Narkasur and called on his sister Subhadra, she welcomed her brother affectionately and made that moment really memorable with lots of flowers and sweets as a token of love. Subhadra performed puja and applied ceremonial tilak including vermillion, dahi and rice on his brother’s forehead and hence, this festival was born.

According to the Hindu folklore, it is said that the God of death, Yamraj had called on his dear sister Yami (Yamuna) on this propitious day. His sister greeted him warmly and completed all the rituals by aarti and tilak ceremony. She offered him a garland and special dishes including his favourite ones which she cooked for her brother. She also prayed to God for the well-being and welfare of her special brother. Her brother shared a unique gift with her sister as a token of love and care towards her sister and also promised to stand for her everytime. On that day, Yamraj himself declared that any brother in this world who would receive aarti and tilak by her sister, he would never be frightened. Therefore, this day is also observed as the ‘Yam Dwitiya’. The various stories and legends justifies the origin and celebration of this special occasion.

According to the Skanda Purana, those who prays to Yamraj gets the covet outcomes. Yamraj and Yamuna are the children of Suryadev. Yamuna is the Goddess Swaroopa who alleviates all suffering and his brother Yamraj is the God of death. It is believed that bathing in Yamuna River and worshipping Yamraj and Yamuna is very important on this special day. Sisters apply tilak on their brother’s forehead and prays with folded hands for his long life and good health. Prosperity, recognition and endurance are also obtained on this day.

There is a custom associated with the unique festival of Bhai Dooj, from the auspicious time of tilak to the worship method.  The five day Diwali festival begins with Dhanteras and hell ends with Chaturdashi, Yamadeep, Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. These festivals have great importance in Hinduism. According to the scriptures, Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month which is falling on 27th October this year. These festivals are celebrated according to the shubh muhurat or auspicious times when we can worship. On the second day of Diwali, sisters invite their brothers and make them eat delicious food cooked by them. They shower blessings on each other. It is believed that if brothers eat food at their sister’s house on this auspicious occasion, the age of brother increases. This festival is the symbol of pure love of brothers and sisters. They share an unmatched relationship. On this day, sister’s wishes are fulfilled by Yamraj. This is why, this festival of Bhai dooj is also known as Yam Dwitiya.

Ideally, Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated after the second day of Deepawali, Kartik Shukla Dwitiya Tithi. This year, we will be celebrating this pious love of brother and sister on 29th October, Tuesday. The auspicious time for the worship is

Brothers and sisters both should worship Yama, Chitragupta and Yama’s messengers in the morning. They along with Suryadev should be offered arghya. While worshiping Yama, sisters pray that O Yamraj, Shri Markandeya, Hanuman, Raja Bali, Parashurama, Vyasa, Vibhishana, Kripacharya and Ashwatthama give these blessings to my brother like Chiranjeevi like these eight Chiranjeevias. After worshipping, sisters should apply tilak and make her brother eat food. She should give Dakshina to her beloved brother as per her strength.

The ones who cannot bathe in Yamuna should celebrate this festival with great pomp and show. May this bond of brothers-sisters love, care and trust  keep on glorifying such grandeur in India! Happy Bhaiya Dooj!
