Sooraj Barjatya was born on 22nd February 1965 in a Marwari Jain family in Mumbai, India. He attended St. Mary’s School in Mumbai and The Scindia School in Gwalior. He is the son of film producer Raj Kumar Barjatya and Sudha Barjatya.

Barjatya’s debut in filmmaking was with 1989 musical romantic drama film Maine Pyar Kiya which also marked Salman Khan’s debut in a leading role. Four out of Barjatya’s six films have been cast with Salman Khan in the lead role. The film became a box office hit that established both Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya in the Bollywood industry. The latest film made by Barjatya was the 2015-romantic drama film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, which was one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The film starred Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor in lead roles alongside Neil Nitin Mukesh, Anupam Kher and Swara Bhaskar in other important roles. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was one of the most expensive Indian films with a budget of INR 1.80 billion.
With a signature trademark of portraying Indian culture and traditions, Barjatya says that this influence including marriages in most of his films is from his childhood memories. Coming from a Marwari joint family he has witnessed several events and wedding ceremonies in his family. Barjatya married Vineeta Barjatya in 1986 and together they have two sons, Devaansh and Avnish and a daughter Eesha. His younger son Avnish is getting ready to make his directorial debut. It was his paternal grandfather, Tarachand Barjatya, who encouraged Barjatya to do his directorial debut Maine Pyar Kiya for Rajshri Productions at the age of 24. Barjatya is the maternal uncle of Vidhi Kasliwal, founder and CEO of Landmarc Films and producers Kavita Kumar Barjatya and Raj Kumar Barjatya are his cousins.
He is also the director of Rajshri Productions, which was founded by Tarachand Barjatya in 1947. Alongside a successful career in the film industry, Barjatya also owns a food joint named Spice and Sweet in Mumbai.
