Amrita Singh Biography
Hailing from a feudal family Punjab, India, Amrita Singh was born on 9th February 1958 in Hadali, Khushab, Punjab. She was born to a Sikh father Shivinder Singh Virk who was an army officer by profession and to a Muslim mother Rukshana Sultana who was a political activist. In the 1970s, her mother was acting as a political ally of Sanjay Gandhi during the Indian emergency. Amrita did her primary education from Modern School in New Delhi. She articulates English, Hindi and Punjabi very well. Her leisure interest includes listening to Ghazals.
If we talk about her affairs while she was single, she went around with a renowned actor Sunny Deol, leading former cricketer Ravi Shastri and a legendary actor Vinod Khanna. She has been a romantic person throughout and her connection with Sunny Deol made the pair very popular in media. After a few years, she was engaged to Cricketer Ravi Shastri in 1986 which grabbed the public’s attention and later, she was inclined towards late Vinod Khanna and got into a relationship.
Amrita exchanged her conjugal vows with Saif Ali Khan in 1991 and converted herself into Islam before marrying him. They married in an Islamic wedding ceremony. Amrita was twelve years elder to Khan which was a huge age gap between the two.
Saif Ali Khan is the son of erstwhile Indian test cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, the ninth Nawab of Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore. By the time Saif made her appearance on the Silver Screen, Amrita was already recognised as the top actress. The couple was separated in the year 2004 after 13 years of marriage. She has two children with Saif Ali Khan – one son named Ibrahim Ali Khan and one daughter named Sara Ali Khan.
Amrita Singh Film Career
An Indian film and TV actress Amrita Singh made her first onscreen appearance with co-actor Sunny Deol in Betaab in 1983. It was a successful film which was followed by a continuous progression of blockbusters like Sunny in 1984, Mard and Saaheb in 1985, Chameli Ki Shaadi and Naam in 1986, Khudgarz in 1987 and Waaris in 1988. It was her Golden Period between the 1980s and 1990s when she was the talk of the town. She worked with the leading stars of her time like Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor and all of her films did well at the box-office. She also made her negative appearances in a few movies such as Rahu Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1992 and Aaina in 1993. She said goodbye to Bollywood focusing more on her personal life in 1993 after her last movie Rang.
Amrita made her comeback to the acting industry post her separation with Saif Ali Khan. She made her negative appearance in Ekta Kapoor’s sitcom Kavyanjali in 2005.
Amrita Singh sent her daughter Sara Ali Khan to Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s wedding. She received a note from Saif Ali Khan wishing Amrita good fortune in her life prior to his marriage to Kareena Kapoor.
Amrita Singh’s Personal Life
The big mass is unaware with the fact that she is the great-niece of late novelist Khushwant Singh and the great grand-daughter of Sobha Singh, through her paternal grandmother Mohinder Kaur, one of the builders of New Delhi. Amrita’s maternal grandmother Zarina Khan’s younger sister Late Begum Para was also an actress. Her husband was Nasir Khan, the brother of Dilip Kumar. Before starting her career in acting, Amrita was a belly dancer. It is said that Amrita’s mother bestowed a lot in setting her up as a successful actress and raised her as a single parent. Amrita Singh and Shahrukh Khan are the playmates and his sister Shahnaz and Amrita did their schooling from the same school. Their mothers were employed at the same place in the Old Delhi area.
She was bestowed with Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Aaina in 1994. She made a hilarious victory of Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role for Kavyanjali in 2005. She has been nominated for Filmfare Best Villain Award for Kalyug in 2006, Stardust Award for Best Supporting Actress for 2 States in 2014 and for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for 2 States in 2015.
In an interview with her ex-husband Saif Ali Khan, he revealed the reason for his separation with Amrita that she used to affront both his mother and sister which he could not tolerate. According to Saif Ali Khan, he was also ordered by the court to pay Rs. 1 lakh as alimony amount every month to Amrita until their son who was under her custody turns 18 years old.
