Pulwama Attack: What went wrong?
At 3:00 PM on 14th February last year, a Jaish-e-Mohammad guerilla smashed a vehicle carrying explosives into the CRPF bus carrying security personnel at Lethpora near Awantipora on Jammu Srinagar highway which took the lives of 40 CRPF Jawans and injured many others. This act of terrorism was planned by the suicide bomber of Pakistan-backed Jaish-e-Mohammad in Pulwama district. Pakistan based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad stood accountable for the entire mishap. It was unveiled in a video that a 22-year old attacker Adil Ahmad Dar hailing from Kakapora united with the group a year back. The criminal became radicalised after being maltreated by the Indian Police. He was abducted six times by Indian authorities and was every time released without any charges.
It was in March 2018 when his parents had last seen him. One day, he left his house on a bicycle and never came back.
A 12-member team by National Investigation Agency was accelerated with the Jammu and Kashmir Police to investigate the attack. The initial analysis advised that there were 300 kilograms of explosives inclusive of 80 kilograms of RDX, a high explosive and ammonium nitrate in the car. Lt Gen Hooda is not able to clearly state how and from where the explosives were obtained. He doubts if these have been embezzled from the construction site or have been smuggled from across the border. Even after a year, the source of explosives is still unknown, But NIA has achieved success in identifying the suicide bomber as DNA samples from ‘meagre fragments of the car’ used in a suicide attack was paired with Adil Ahmad Dar’s father.
The State funerals of CRPF Security Personnel who were assassinated in Pulwama Suicide Attack took place in their respective native places. The Punjab government had promulgated the employment for the victim’s next kin and ex gratia allowance of Rs. 12 lakh each to the family of killed CRPF Jawan.

A big number of JeM terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and groups of Jihadis being trained there for fidayeen actions were abolished which is reported to be between 200 and 300. The next day on February 27th, an Indian MiG-21 was shot down over Pakistan in a subsequent dogfight amongst Indian and Pakistani jets and its pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s parachute landed in PoK where he was seized by the Pakistani army.
