One of Bollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers, Subhash Ghai celebrated his 75th birthday on 24th January 2020.
Subhash Ghai: Biography
Born on 24th January 1945 in Nagpur, the renowned director, producer and screenwriter, Subhash Ghai began his career in the Bollywood industry with small roles in films like Taqdeer, which was released in 1967 and Aradhana, released in 1971. He even got the leading role in the 1970 film Umang and the 1976 film Gumraah.
Ghai made his directorial debut with the film Kalicharan in 1976 which he got through a reference by Shatrughan Sinha. Not many know that Sinha had earlier turned down the movie. Lately, at an event, Sinha recalled, “I refused to do Kalicharan when I first heard the script but later agreed to do it because of my friend Subhash Ghai as it was his directorial debut.” The movie turned out to be a huge hit.
As of 2016, Ghai has written and directed a total of 16 movies.
In 1982, Ghai founded Mukta Arts Private Limited which became a public company in 2000. In 2006, he earned the National Film Award for producing the film based on social issues ‘Iqbal’. In the same year, he started the Whistling Woods International Film and Media Institute in Mumbai.
Popularly known as the showman of Hindi film industry, Subhash Ghai received the IIFA Award for outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema. Besides, he received the Business World Award for the Pioneering contribution in the field of Cinema Exhibition. The showman of Hindi Cinema had also been honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards, Best Director and Best Screenplay awards, and many more.
Subhash Ghai studied commerce from Rohtak, Haryana, and then went on to graduate in Cinema from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
In 1970, he married Rehana alias Mukta. Today, he lives with his wife and daughters Meghna Ghai Puri and Muskaan Ghai in Mumbai.

#MeToo Controversy
In 2018, Subhash Ghai was accused of rape by an anonymous woman who alleged that he spiked her drink and then sexually assaulted her. According to her, she was working on a film with the director many years ago when Ghai would often call her for script sessions at his apartment which he would allegedly call his “thinking pad”. She claimed Ghai once forcefully kissed her, as well. On this, Ghai told PTI, “It’s sad that it is becoming a fashion to malign anyone known, bringing some stories from past without any truth or blown up false allegations if all. I deny strictly and firmly all false allegations like these.” The director said he has always been respectful towards women in life as well in the workplace.
“If she claims this way, she should go to the court of law and prove it. Justice will be done or I will go for defamation certainly,” he added.
Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai Controversy
According to a Mid-day report, there was an incident when Salman Khan had allegedly slapped Subhash Ghai at a party as he apparently didn’t like a certain comment that the filmmaker had made. But when Salim Khan, Salman’s father, was informed about the episode, he asked his son to apologise. Soon, everything was resolved between the two.
Subhash Ghai and Madhuri Dixit
According to media reports, Subhash Ghai didn’t invite Madhuri Dixit at a party which was held to celebrate 30th year of film Ram Lakhan. From Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik to Gulshan Grover, all were present except Madhuri Dixit. When asked, Ghai said, “We have not invited Madhuri because, with the ladies, the biggest problem is that they come with baggage, their managers, boys — an entourage whereas with heroes —they just pick up their bags and come.”
