Emraan Hashmi is an Indian film actor who appears in Hindi films. He celebrated his 41st birthday on 24th March 2020. Throughout his career, Hashmi received three Filmfare Award nominations and remains to be among the foremost popular and highest-paid actors of Hindi cinema.

Hashmi is the son of Syed Anwar Hashmi, a businessman, who also acted in the 1968 film Baharon Ki Manzil, and, Maherrah Hashmi, was a homemaker. Hashmi belongs as a member of the Bhatt family as his grandmother, Meherbano Mohammad Ali, known by her screen name Purnima, was the sister of Shirin Mohammad Ali, the mother of producers Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt, Hashmi’s uncles. Emraan is said to be related to actors Smiley Suri, Alia Bhatt, Rahul Bhatt and Onjalee Nair and is cousin to Bollywood directors Mohit Suri, Vishesh Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt. Hashmi studied at the Jamnabai Narsee School and later, he attended Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai. Hashmi has earned a bachelor’s degree in Commerce and is an alumnus of University of Mumbai.
Vikram Bhatt’s Footpath marked Hashmi’s acting debut in 2003, co-starring alongside Aftab Shivdasani and Bipasha Basu. He portrayed the role of Raghu Shrivastav, a gangster. His performance within the film was appreciated by critics who described his character as the “scene-stealer” and praised his mannerisms. After appearing in his debut film, he changed his name from Emraan to Farhan Hashmi, but decided to convert it back to Emraan after the release of his film Murder. He worked as an assistant director for the 2002 horror film Raaz before pursuing a career in acting. While Emraan’s father is Muslim and his mother belonged to Christianity, Hashmi is a Muslim by religion and he considers himself spiritual and a firm believer of God. In December 2006, Hashmi tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend Parveen Shahani in an Islamic wedding after a six and a half-year relationship. The couple have a son, Ayaan Hashmi, who was born on 3 February 2010.
Hashmi has had his own episodes of handling difficult times. On 15th January 2004, his son Ayaan was diagnosed with first-stage cancer. His mother, Maherrah Hashmi, died on 11 March 2016. But, this didn’t deter the actor in him and he didn’t cancel the shooting of his film, Azhar. He didn’t want to delay the shoot of Azhar any longer and also wanted to occupy his mind with work. So, he returned to the sets the soonest he could. In 2016, Hashmi launched the auto-biographical book called “Kiss of Life” where he wrote about his experience handling his son’s cancer diagnosis and treatments.

Enacting the role of a fanatical lover with flourish, there is no denying that the narrative gets a serious impetus because of Emraan’s performance.” For his performance in Kalyug (2005), Taran Adarsh wrote: “Emraan Hashmi makes a quick appearance and therefore the actor is, like always, highly competent.” Rediff.com’s Raja Sen wrote pertaining to his performance in Gangster (2006), “His character is an understated one, and Hashmi manages to stay it that way. there’s no unnecessary bluster or melodrama, and he does a reasonably believable job. there’s something lazy about his acting, by which I mean he makes the work look easy.” For his performance as Joginder Parmar in Shanghai (2013), he received positive reviews for enjoying a personality which was different from his usual roles. Madhureeta Mukherjee of the days of India wrote that Hashmi “looks the part and achieves an act he should be pleased with .” Raja Sen wrote: “Emraan Hashmi, delivers a haymaker as he masters a sophisticated role” and called it as “the year’s finest, bravest and most consistent performance.”
