In a stunning twist in the horrific gangrape and murder case of a young veterinarian in Hyderabad, all four accused were shot dead by the Telangana Police in a reported encounter. Police said that the accused tried to escape from the spot where they were taken for a reconstruction of the crime scene.
The four accused—Mohammed Arif (26), Jollu Naveen (20), Jollu Shiva (20), and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20) had been taken to the spot in the wee hours to reconstruct the crime scene. The accused were not handcuffed, said the police. According to the police, the accused attacked the police with some sharp objects and snatched their weapons, which were already unlocked. Two policemen suffered head injuries in the attack. The bodies were moved after six hours. A huge crowd gathered on the bridge and cheered the police.
The Telangana High Court has asked for the post-mortem videos of the accused and that the bodies of the rape accused to be preserved till Monday, 8 pm.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to send a team to investigate the alleged police encounter.
Hyderabad Gangrape Case Timeline
November 27
The four accused saw the woman parking her vehicle near a toll plaza at 6 pm and while consuming alcohol, they planned to commit the crime. The victim had left her house to attend her duty at a veterinary hospital. She returned in the evening at the toll plaza, parked her scooty nearby and took a cab to visit a dermatologist. As part of the plan, one of the accused deflated a tyre of the victim’s scooty. When the victim returned to toll plaza at 9.18 pm, one of the men approached and told her about her deflated tyre and offered her to get it repaired, to which, the victim innocently agreed.
Meanwhile, the victim had called her sister around 9.45 pm and told her about the punctured scooty and the man who offered her help. She also said that she was feeling scared due to the presence of some truck drivers near her. The victim’s sister had advised her to leave the vehicle, and return home by a cab. However, when the victim’s sister later called her back, the mobile was switched off. As she was waiting for the vehicle, the four accused caught hold of her and took her away from the main road and took turns to rape her.
After the rape and murder, the two accused put the body in a truck and headed towards Shadnagar. The other accused followed them on the victim’s scooty. The accused on the scooty bought petrol in a bottle and also took out diesel from the truck. They all reached Shadnagar crossroads and carried the body to the underpass by covering it in a blanket. Then they set the body on fire and left. The investigations also revealed that the duo on the scooty went back to check whether the body was properly burnt or not. They later disposed of the victim’s vehicle near Kothu and all four of them returned to Hyderabad in their truck.
The victim’s family lodged a missing complaint with the police around 11 pm.
November 28
On Thursday morning, the police found a charred body near Shadnagar and it was identified as the body of the missing woman.
November 29
Two truck drivers and two cleaners were arrested by Cyberabad Police in connection with the case. According to the Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, the victim died of asphyxiation during the rape as the accused had tightly held her mouth.
November 30
All the four accused were produced in the court and sent to 14-day judicial custody. They were later shifted to Chanchalguda Central Jail. In the evening, three personnel of the Hyderabad police were suspended for the delay in registering an FIR in the case.
December 1
The Telangana government had ordered a fast-track trial in the case.
December 6
All the four accused were killed in a police encounter at Chatanpally, Shadnagar in the wee hours of the day. The encounter happened at Shadnagar, which is around 60 km from Hyderabad. The police took the accused there for re-construction of the crime scene as part of the investigation. However, the accused tried to escape from the spot and also attacked the police. They also tried to snatch weapons from the police too, after which, the police, in self-defence, killed them.
