The popular Indian dancer, choreographer, actor and film director, Remo D’Souza celebrated his 46th birthday this year on April 2.
Remo D’Souza Biography
Remo D’Souza was born on April 2, 1974, in Bangalore to K. Gopi, a chef in the Indian Air Force, and Madhvi Laxmi. He hails from Olavakkode, in Palakkad, Kerala. He has an elder brother Ganesh Gopi and four younger sisters. Remo did his schooling from the Air Force School in Jamnagar, Gujarat. He was an athlete in the school and won prizes in the 100-meter race.
Remo D’Souza as Choreographer
In his early career, he worked as a background dancer in many popular songs in Bollywood. He made his entry in the Bollywood as an assistant to choreographer Ahmed Khan in the 1995 film Rangeela. Ahmed Khan won the Filmfare Award for Best Choreography for the film. Remo did his first pop choreography for Sonu Nigam’s album Deewana produced by T-Series in June 1999. A breakthrough in his career was with the choreography for the song ‘Ishq Samundar’ in the 2002 film Kaante. In the same year, he choreographed songs in Shaad Ali’s romantic drama film Saathiya produced by Mani Ratnam and Yash Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films. Remo notable works as a choreographer in the Bollywood are in films including Khalid Mohammed’s drama film Tehzeeb in 2003, S. Shankar’s science fiction action film Enthiran in 2010, Karan Johar’s coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama film Student of the Year in 2012, Ayan Mukerji’s romantic drama film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in 2013, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic historical romance film Bajirao Mastani in 2015 and Abhishek Varman’s period drama film Kalank in 2019. Some of his popular choreographies are for the some “Badtameez Dil” in the 2013 film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, “Sun Saathiya” from the film ABCD – 2 and “Selfie Le Re” from the film Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
He made his directorial debut with the film F.A.L.T.U starring Jackky Bhagnani, Puja Gupta, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Angad Bedi and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead role with Arshad Warsi, Akbar Khan and Darshan Jariwala appearing in supporting roles. In 2013, he directed the 3D dance drama film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance starring Prabhu Deva, Ganesh Acharya and Kay Kay Menon in the lead role with participants of the dance reality show Dance India Dance, which he judged in 2019, appearing in supporting roles. In 2015, he directed the ABCD 2 as a sequel to ABCD: Any Body Can Dance starring Prabhu Deva, Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Sushant Pujari, Raghav Juyal, Dharmesh Yelande, Punit Pathak and Lauren Gottlieb. In 2016, he had co-written and directed the superhero film A Flying Jatt featuring Tiger Shroff, Jacqueline Fernandez and Nathan Jones in the lead roles.
Remo was one of the judges of Zee TV’s popular dance reality show Dance India Dance premiered in 2019. He along with Madhuri Dixit and Karan Johar judged the reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa from 2010 to 2014 which was aired on Sony Entertainment Television and later on Colors TV. He was also a super judge on Star Plus TV’s dance reality series, Dance Plus premiered on July 2015. He currently judges Star Plus TV’s dance reality series Dance Champions along with Terence Lewis.
Remo D’Souza Achievements
Remo D’Souza won the Vijay Awards for Best Find of the Year in 2011 for his choreography in 2010 film Enthiran. The choreography for the song “Badtameez Dil” in 2013 film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani won him Screen Awards for Best Choreography, Zee Cine Awards for Best Choreography, International Indian Film Academy Awards for Best Choreography and Producer’s Guild Film Awards for Best Choreography in 2014. He also won Producer’s Guild Film Awards for Best Choreography for the song “Balam Pichkari” in the film.
In 2016, he won Stardust Awards’ Best Choreography for all songs of ABCD 2 and Screen Awards’ Best Choreography for the song “Sunn Saathiya” in the film ABCD 2. The choreography for the song “Deewani Mastani” in the 2015 film Bajirao Mastani made him win his first National Award for Best Choreography in the 63rd National Film Awards. He also won the International Indian Film Academy Awards’ Best Choreography for “Deewani Mastani” and Producer’s Guild Film Awards for Best Choreography for the song “Pinga”.
Remo D’Souza Personal Life
Remo married Lizelle D’Souza, an Anglo-Indian from Mumbai. Lizelle is a costume designer who has worked in many television shows. They have two sons Dhruv and Gabriel. Remo lives in Andheri West in Mumbai with his family. He didn’t take any professional dance training but idolized Michael Jackson in his style. After completing his schooling from the Air Force School in Jamnagar, he moved to Mumbai for pursuing a career in dancing. He started a dance school named Super Brats in Mumbai with 4 students. In his early career, he worked as a background dancer in many popular songs in Bollywood. He made his entry in the Bollywood as an assistant to choreographer Ahmed Khan in the film Rangeela. Remo’s favourite actors are Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Madhuri Dixit and favourite dancer is Michael Jackson.
