Rahul Roy Biography
An Indian film thespian, producer and a former model, Rahul Roy, who gained a lot of recognition after his blockbuster movie ‘Aashiqui’, has turned 52 this year. Rahul Roy’s was born on 9th February 1968. His father Deepak Roy was a businessman and mother Indira Roy was a writer for the UNICEF magazine. He was born in Kolkata, in the state of West Bengal, India. He has one twin brother Rohit Roy. He loves playing cricket, reading books and swimming. He went to St. Columbus High School, New Delhi and The Lawrence School, Sanawar, Solan in Himachal Pradesh for his studies.
Rahul Roy Film Career
In 1990, Rahul Roy got a big break in Mahesh Bhatt directorial ‘Aashiqui’ which gave him popularity and recognition across the world. He played the lead role in this movie along with his co-artist Anu Aggarwal. Rahul Roy was known for his long hair with his first debut movie ‘Aashiqui’. Star wannabes had started asking for Rahul Roy haircut after his first movie’s electrifying success. He had become the trendsetter and youth icon of his era.
Rahul Roy was flooded with a bundle of film offers after looking the 6 months grand slam on box office. He signed nearly 40 movies during that spell.
In 1992, he worked in the romantic movie ‘Sapne Sajan Ke’ with his co-artist Karishma Kapoor. This movie again hit the Silver Screens with his notable songs which include ‘Tu Meri Zindagi Hai’, ‘Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum’ and ‘Jaane Jigar Jaan-e-man’. Nadeem Shravan music with Kumar Sanu vocals supported him a lot in making the film a super hit. He again delivered a brilliant performance in Mahesh Bhatt’s autobiography based movie-Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee in which he appeared as a filmmaker. As a matter of fact, this movie was Zee TV’s primary mainstream movie production and its story was positioned on Mahesh Bhatt’s love saga with late actress Parveen Babi. The lead couple Rahul Roy and Pooja Bhatt played the strong performances and Anu Malik gave the melodious music. Though Rahul gave his wonderful appearances in several romantic movies throughout the early 1990s but despite having been a good actor with good looks, he could not bang on the Silver Screen again.
He worked in various films like Majhdaar, Dilwale Kabhi Na Hare, Pyaar Ka Saaya and Jaanam which were liked by the followers but the films were not good enough. His biggest movie ‘Junoon’ was the turning point in his life in which he gave an outstanding performance in a supporting actor role. In 1992 Filmfare Awards, he was nominated for the Best Actor. The film broke the records in certain territories like CPCI-Rajasthan when it was released. It kicked off with a flying start and was the good earner on box office.
Some of his movies were shelved which include K. Balachander’s project Dilon Ka Rishta and Ayudh because of the untimely death of the producer, Premabhishek, Tune Mera Dil Le Liya with Raveena Tandon, N.R. Pachisia’s Dil Diya Chori Chori with Karishma Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt’s Kalyug, Harry Baweja’s Vajra with Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shirodkar and Jab Jab Dil Mile with Karishma Kapoor and Nagma.
Rahul Roy ventured his movie production house name Rahul Roy Productions and released its first film, Elaan on 25th November 2011 in Bihar. Roy and Rituparna Sen acted in this movie as a lead pair.
Rahul made his comeback in Bollywood after about four years and played a lead role in Meri Aashiqui in 2005. His latest movies include the comedy Naughty Boy in 2006 and Rafta Rafta in which he enacted the role of an underworld don. Roy again came with Harikirat Films psychological thriller To B or Not To B.
Rahul Roy Personal Life
Rahul Roy exchanged the nuptial vows with Rajlakshmi Khanvilkar who was a fashion model and was separated from Samir Soni. They met at a party in 1998 and dated for almost two years.
He was rumoured to have an affair with actress Pooja Bhatt. He also proposed Manisha Koirala and dated her for some time. He was into a healthy relationship with model turned actor Suman Ranganathan but could not spend quality time with each other and subsequently parted.
He has hosted several TV shows like Kaise Kahoon in 1998, Karishma-The Miracles of Destiny as Rahul in 2003-2004, participant and jubilant in Big Boss 1 in 2006. He was a Special Guest at Comedy Nights Bachao in 2016 and at The Kapil Sharma Show in February 2020.
Rahul Roy was conferred with the Life Membership of the ‘International Film & Television Club’ of Asian Academy of Film & Television. He has garnered several accolades for his excellent performances like SCAM Award in Sundar Nagri (2004) and Society Interiors Award at 14th Society Interiors Design Competition (2015).
